Downham Football Project 2016

Downham Football Project

In 2016 Sports Fun 4 All received funding from the Downham Assembly to deliver free football coaching for young people aged 10 – 18. The project ran every Friday night from September to December at the Downham Health & Leisure Centre. The sessions provided a positive diversionary activity for local young people. In total, the project engaged over 50 young people and averaged 20 attendees per session.

Our coaches used their youth work skills and sports qualifications to engage the young people that led to the project being a deterrent to the young people that were involved in anti-social behaviour. The outreach focused on engaging with the young people in their local estates and encouraging them to attend the sessions.

The funding had finished in December 2016, but there was still a demand from the young people for regular football coaching. Therefore, in January 2017, we started the Friday Night Development Centre as a paid session. More than half of the young people continued attending, evidence of the young people’s value of our service provision.
